Title: A Curious Catalogue
By (author): Michael Leon
ISBN10-13: 3905714922 : 9783905714920
A Curious Catalogue is a skateboard product catalogue of pencil drawn anti-graphics, spin-art wheels, and slalom gemstones. It was designed to take a romantic and fantastic vision of a skateboard company and make it â realâ . Michael Leon was inspired by the naïve wonder he experienced as a young skateboarder, which he juxtaposes with an elegant, yet dry, catalogue sales format. The result is a carefree and poetic narrative carried by a range of imagined products.

Title: A Rare Gift of the Tropics
By (author): General Idea
ISBN10-13: 3907179617 : 9783907179611
Living and working together as part of the late 1960s Toronto counterculture, AA Bronson (b. Michael Tims, 1946, Vancouver), Felix Partz (b. Ronald Gabe, 1945, Winnipeg, d. 1994), and Jorge Zontal (b. Slobodan Saia-Levy, 1944, Parma, d. 1994) formalized their collaboration in 1969 as a single entity known as General Idea. From their earliest projects like staging of The 1970 Miss General Idea Pageant to their late activist initiatives around the AIDS crisis, General Idea explored multimedia, conceptual, and performance work as a tool for engaging with common culture and its repressions. A definitive retrospective of General Idea is currently travelling from the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Gropius Bau in Berlin. An extensive exhibition of these drawings has been shown at the Drawing Center in New York and MAMCO in Geneva. Less well-known are the groupâ s drawings, the vast majority of which have never been seen. The drawings shown in A Rare Gift of the Tropics were all produced by Jorge Zontal, who made them as a habitual practice during the groupâ s brainstorming meetings; however, given General Ideaâ s mandate for co-authorship (and as demonstrated by the â GIâ signature affixed by Zontal shortly before his death) as well as the circumstances under which they were executed, they are considered to be collaborative. The drawings assumed a greater regularity after 1985, the year the group left Toronto, which felt increasingly isolated from the global art world, for New York. As the 1980s wore on, their early joie de vivre was tempered by the pervasive presence of AIDS. In Bronsonâ s words, it was a period â during which we had to face and somehow incorporate the illness and death of most of our friends, as well as Jorge and Felix themselves. â Although drawn by hand, the repetition of specific motifs follows a logic that is akin to General Ideaâ s own penchant for mass reproduction and that echo the virality of their AIDS works. In their mutability and insistent flow, the drawings are a fascinating window into General Ideaâ s distinct artistic vision and unique notions of authorship, exposing representationâ s inadequacy while acknowledging its urgency.

Title: Agglorhythmus
By (author): Bastien Aubry
ISBN10-13: 3907179277 : 9783907179277
Bastien Aubry, born in 1974 in Saint-Imier (Switzerland), attended the Ecole dâ Arts Visuels Berne et Bienne, Switzerland. Since 2010 he is part of the artist group Aubry Broquard, which has been included in numerous exhibitions internationally, including the Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art in New York and MABA in Paris. Since 2017, Bastien Aubry continues his sculptural practice as a solo artist. Bastien Aubryâ s artistic approach consists of alienating everyday objects in a playful and ironic way. His mischievous works evoke fascinating visual effects by mixing design, art history and pop culture. His creations celebrate the poetry of failure and the beauty of the less than perfect, an accident by design. The artist stages reality in his own world, exposing everyday absurdities and toying with the boundaries set by traditional artistic practices. Three-dimensional works are constrained by the material they are made of, and for Bastien Aubry, it is most important to recognize the physical property of each material in order to experiment with visually exiting effects. To exaggerate, enlarge, stack, fill, crushâ ¦ There is always an element of surprise and spontaneity present in his oeuvre.

Title: Album
By (author): Sam Porritt
ISBN10-13: 3907179943 : 9783907179949
Sam Porritt is an artist living and working in Zurich, working across drawing, sculpture, text and the moving image, his work is concerned with whole spectrum of human behavior and its implications. What can at first appear to be unconnected ideas and questions, often articulated in disparate ways, are in fact often the same intractable problems only viewed from different perspectives. Added to this is his underlying interest in producing things that â stand-aloneâ , artworks that require little if any corroborating information outside of themselves. Album is composed of six loose A3 sheets, folded in half and assembled at random. The individual sheets can be taken apart and framed. Each sheet features a full color ink and wax crayon drawing on one side and a black and white, brush and ink one on the other. Together, they form an anthology of Sam Porrittâ s drawings of the last twenty years.

By (author): Chris Johanson
ISBN10-13: 3907179811 : 9783907179819
Chris Johanson (b. 1968) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and Portland, OR. A central figure of San Franciscoâ s Mission School, the post-punk movement that integrated aspects of both graffiti and folk art, Johansonâ s multidimensional practice encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, design, and music. Incorporating disparate influences that underscore the complexity of life, his work is centered upon themes that include spirituality, sociology, and environmental observation. Johanson began working on figurative drawings and painting on skateboards at an early age. His compositions position themselves as conceptually open â they are fluid to interpretation and invite reflection on everyday life and the human condition.

Title: Architettura Attenuata
By (author): Ettore Sottsass
ISBN10-13: 3907179323 : 9783907179321
| Ettore Sottsass (1917â 2007) was an architect and designer, labeled the godfather of Italian design. Born in Austria and based in Milan, Sottsass studied architecture at the Politecnico di Torino in Turin. After spending most of World War II in a concentration camp in Yugoslavia, Sottsass returned to Italy, where he set up his studio. In 1958, he was hired as a design consultant for the Olivetti company, a position he held for more than 20 years. While there, he produced many designs, including the Elea 9003 computer and the red plastic Valentine portable typewriter. His aim was to produce objects that went beyond typical consumerist products. As Sottsass distanced himself from pure functionalism, he started experimenting with designs that had social and historical components. During this time, Sottsass became a leading figure in the Radical-Design movement. In 1981, Sottsass led a group of designers who came to be known as the Memphis group. This group experimented with colors and materials, creating multifunctional pieces and breaking with convention. Their new materials included neon, unusual finishes, and patterned plastic laminates. After Memphis, Sottsass continued to produce provocative work, constantly challenging the accepted practices of the day. He also established the architectural firm Sottsass Associati, with the aim of producing large-scale designs. Sottsassâ s work has been the subject of retrospective exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Design Museum in London, among others. His numerous awards included the title of Office of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic in 1992, an honorary degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1993 an Honorary Doctor of the Royal College of Art in London in 1996, an Oribe Award in Japan in 1997, and a Sir Misha Black Award in 1999. | Title: Ausmalbuch |
By (author): Erik Steinbrecher
ISBN10-13: 3907179064 : 9783907179062
Erik Steinbrecher canâ t stop. Here's another handy album with new works on paper. It is called Ausmalbuch (Coloringbook). In his own way, Steinbrecher roughly arranges montages, collages, silhouettes and fine sketches. But the title of the book is kidding us. This coloring book is already colored in and finished. Letâ s get infected by the artist and just keep on shaping. Erik Steinbrecher was born in Basel in 1963 and lives in Berlin. Steinbrecher is known to a wide international audience particularly since his participation in documenta X (1997) as well as further major institutional presentations such as at Kunst-Werke in Berlin, MoMA PS1 in New York, the Kunsthalle Vienna, the Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich or The Weserburg Museum of Modern Art in Bremen. His work as artist has developed in two main directions; the areas of sculpture and architecture as well as the realm of publication. Steinbrecher released numerous books and printed matters, which always expose a strong conceptual idea and function as independent artworks.

Title: Autumn / Winter
By (author): Nigel Peake
ISBN10-13: 3907179218 : 9783907179215
Mitosaya is a distillery founded by Hiroshi Eguchi, located in Chiba prefecture, a few hours outside of Tokyo. It use to be a botanical garden. I have visited twice, both times in late autumn. Each visit to Mitosaya was as if dropping into a small new world, one that Hiroshi and his family have shaped. The drawings presented in these two slim volumes have been made as labels for Mitosayaâ s brewing this year. Itâ s hard to summarise the work of artist â or as he has suggested it â drawerâ â Nigel Peake because there is so much of it and itâ s varied. Nigel, who grew up in Ballytrustan (County Down) and currently lives between there and Paris, originally studied architecture in Edinburgh for six years and in 2013 lived in Switzerland for a period to teach an architectural studio. In the past 10 years heâ s written and drawn 50 books, published by Princeton Architectural Press, Yvon Lambert or by himself. His work is based on places he has visited. His clients include Hermès, Flos, Rapha, and Luca Guadagnino. His work has been exhibited in Tokyo, New York and Paris.
