In this book, Alice Buzdugan examines the cultural-political dimensions of the literary work of two Romanian-German authors and cultural mediators who decisively shaped the image of the Danube Carpathian region in Germany in the 20th century: Adolf Meschendörfer (18771963) and Oscar Walter Cisek (18971966 ). The focus is on the national self-location of the two dissimilar writers, competing aesthetics of the city motif, particularly in the novels "Uncomfortable Love" (1932) by Cisek and "Die Stadt im Osten" (1931) by Meschendörfer as well as the interactions between the Romanian, German and Romanian German Literature from the interwar period. As Buzdugan shows for the first time in their comprehensive comparison, Cisek and Meschendörfer used similar literary means as well as comparable national, ethnic and social stereotypes to use their prose for their respective cultural-political goals.
