This study takes as its starting point the following observation: The concept of *intrinsece malum*, a normative term primarily associated with Catholic sexual ethics, appears to be expanding in scope and is now frequently invoked in various theological disciplines, in church practice, and even in statements made by church representatives in public discourse. In the broadest sense, â intrinsece malumâ refers to those actions that are morally reprehensible under all circumstances, regardless of the specific circumstances or the intention of the actor. In order to adequately assess this recent development in the use of the term â intrinsece malum,â this study undertakes both a historical analysis of the conceptâ s origins and dimensions of meaning and a critical-hermeneutical examination of its current usage and relevance in theological ethics as well as in broader public discourse.
