| All too often, trans people are vilified because of fear, disinformation and misinformation. Trans people are not a debate to be won, but individuals who are entitled to have their fundamental human rights respected and protected. A binary understanding of sex fails to account for the overlap and fluidity of biological sex characteristics. The definition of sex used in this book is that it is a multidimensional spectrum influenced by biological, chromosomal, hormonal and anatomical variations. Charlie, a trans law student, describes the influence of chromosomes on sex like this: â Chromosomes are like Ikea instructions: you can follow them or throw them out and do your own thing.â The ongoing struggle for trans rights is deeply entwined with the broader pursuit of human rights and dignity. Its trajectory will continue to be shaped by the courage of individuals and communities across the world. |
