Speaking / pronunciation skills : Cree / Ojibway : Algonkian (Algonquin) languages |
| Cree, a member of the Algonquian family of languages, is nationally recognized as the most widely spoken Canadian native language. The revised Spoken Cree, Level II explores the spoken and written language in the cultural context of a Northern Cree village. Spoken Cree, Level II is the intermediate volume of a three-level Cree language course. This volume builds on the fundamental knowledge of the Cree language established in Spoken Cree, Level I. From the weather to a wedding, tea breaks to trapping, Level II enriches Cree language proficiency in everyday situations. In addition to sections devoted to developing speaking and listening skills in conversation, Level II provides exercises in syllabic writing. Each of the 18 new lessons includes: . basic conversation-introduces vocabulary in typical conversations; . discussion of grammar-provides clear explanations of grammatical principles; . drills-reinforces grammatical patterns through practical exercise; . conversation practice-develops free conversation skills; . listening in-improves listening ability; . reference list-includes new vocabulary for each unit; . review-offers practice with simple questions and answers. Based on the Swampy Cree (N-Dialect) and Moose Cree (L-Dialect) spoken on the West Coast of James Bay, C. Douglas Ellis's Spoken Cree has become the authoritative work on the Cree language since its original release in 1963. Spoken Cree, Level II is an essential resource and teaching tool for everyone interested in the Cree language. |

“Ellis
presents a revised edition for the intermediate volume of his three-level Cree language course, originally released in 1963. Building on the fundamentals covered in Spoken Cree, Level I, the text explores the language in the cultural context of a typical northern Cree village. Coverage includes more complex grammatical concepts, including modes, tenses and submodes of the conjunct order; more advanced processes of composition and derivation; and the various forms of the preterit, both independent and conjunct. Extensive use of the syllabary is introduced, with exercises in syllabic writing. The second-level text no longer contains the full glossary; a glossary for all three levels will be appended to Spoken Cree, Level III.” Reference & Research Book News, August 2005
